It was supposed to be a victory day

It was a closed courtroom that had the final hearing on the Stilinski-Grayson divorce. The evidence against the Grayson family as a whole was damning from the photographs of the attempted kidnapping, the assault charges, the history of abuse... it wasn't hard for the judge to grant the divorce.

It was the terms that shocked Stiles the most: Permanent No Contact order of Protection for him and Dina against the Graysons and any family member or agent on their behalf. Any contact moving forward for Stiles or Dina would be done through the Law Office of Samuel Winchester. Suzanna's parental rights over Claudia Marie were terminated, no visitation by anyone in the family or agents acting on their behalf, and Stiles was given sole custody of his daughter with an order to change her birth certificate to remove the Grayson part of her name and Suzanna from her records.

And then the big one: in order to protect the Stilinski family, alimony and child support would be established as a single lump-sum payment based on the financials of the Grayson family and taking into consideration the medical needs Stiles would continue to face both physical and emotionally at present and in the future, and to support Dina for all her present and future medical and educational needs.

Two Million Dollars. Half kept in trust for Dina until her 18th birthday or graduation from high school, whichever came first. The other half in account for Stiles to use as he deemed necessary to provide for his family. Plus all of Sam's legal fees were paid by the Grayson's.

And that was that. Stiles stood, partially in shock as the team of lawyers left with Suzanna and her father, and then he just turned and hugged Sam tightly. The taller man smiled at Malia, nodding at a job well done, and hugged his client back. "You did it, Stiles. You got your daughter the safety you wanted for her. Now it's time for you both to build a better life."

A plumbing issue had kept Stiles from moving into Allison's father's place right away, so he was still at the Hale house. Things had gotten a bit easier with the anger finally out in the air. But after a long day at court, Stiles was ready to join his daughter for naptime before dinner.

John hadn't wanted to worry Stiles, but the Grayson brothers had made bail and weren't in custody any longer. He warned Talia, but with the protective orders in place, putting a detail on the house wasn't possible without a real threat in the air.

No one realized that out in the desert, deals had been made between the family patriarch and another patriarch - Gerard Argent. Knowing that the Hales were protecting the granddaughter of his good friend, it was easy to help equip the two sons with a chip on their shoulder with the right weapons, and a team of hand picked hunters, to help them give one last message that no one could walk away from the Grayson family and expect to win.

Cora and Lydia moved out of her mother's house a couple days after the blow out with Stiles. Cora is aware that Lydia is judging her for it, she just can't really bring herself to care at the moment. Giving Stiles his space seemed like the best idea for everyone, and as much as the fight had left her moody and miserable, she tries not to take it out on Lydia.

That is, until Lydia makes a very sudden and almost deadly u-turn while they're running errands in town. Cora finds herself snapped out of her thoughts, jerked away and thrown back against the window on the passenger's side, her head connecting with a crack. "Ow," she hisses, turning to face her with a glare. "Lydia, what the hell?"

"Did you hear that?"

In an instant, the anger fades and is replaced with a look of genuine concern. Lydia hadn't had an episode since Boston. Why is it happening now?

"What'd you hear?"

She doesn't respond, just makes a series of hair pin turns, each punctuated by a vocal "Bang!" almost like a car backfiring. It doesn't take Cora long to realize where they're going, and immediately her heart sinks to her stomach.

"The preserve? Why are we going to the preserve?" She tries to snap her out of it, because sometimes coherency can help get more information from her but Lydia's too lost in the thrall of whatever this is to get anything from her.

She skids to a stop in front of the Hale house, bright blue car blocking in Derek and Fiona's truck and she stumbles out of the driver's seat without even bothering to turn the car off. Her body jumps each time she hears a subsequent bang! and now it's being joined by voices and howls all talking, all at once, jumbling together with more and more noise, and her hands slide to her hair as she drops to her knees.

"Shut up, shut up, shut up," she murmurs, rocking back and forth as Cora drops to her knees in front of her. "Please God, shut up, I can't know what you want if you don't shut up."

Derek was in the kitchen with Liam when he heard the commotion coming from the front of the house. He stood up slowly, trying to hear the voice, and put a hand on Liam's shoulder. "Stay here, kiddo," he told his foster son, then moved to the living room looking for his mother and wife, because something was wrong and he couldn't put his finger on it.

Meanwhile, outside people were moving to positions. One of the Argent hunters recognized the Hale on the front yard with the babbling redhead and he lined her up in his sights. May as well get some work done while on this job. All he needed was the signal.

Talia and Fiona are already at the window, and Fiona is going for her gun. Not that it'll do much for a banshee in this situation but she feels better with a shotgun in her hand more often than not. Talia, on the other hand, just watches the woods, trying to figure out exactly what's going on.

"Something's wrong."

"Lydia," Cora begins gently, reaching out to place a hand on her knee. "What is it? What do they want you to hear?"

Lydia looks up at her briefly, eyes wide and wild as she tries to process all the information cramming itself into her brain at once. The voices don't lessen any, however, in fact, it only makes them amplify, as evidenced by the way her voice picks up pitch as she starts to ramble.

"You'd think that if they wanted you to hear something, they would put it in a way you could understand it. You can't really do complex equations and the mambo at the same time, you wind up all off rhythm, and then what happens? All you have is a bunch of mismatched numbers and two left feet and I swear, if you all don't shut up, I'm going to scre - "

The word is cut off by a long shrill cry, loud and sharp and Cora has to glance away briefly, to shield her hearing from the blast. But when it's done, Lydia's face goes calm and dazed, almost as though everything's been brought into sudden, unavoidable focus.

"Someone's coming," she whispers, her voice sounding a little far away. "A lot of someone's." There's a brief hint of a smile at the end, almost like the punchline to a joke. "And they're all going to die."

There's a snap of a twig somewhere to Cora's left, and her head snaps around, before she's grabbing her friend, pulling her up and pushing her towards the porch. "Lydia, get inside now."

The bullets start flying and Talia is pulling whoever is nearest to her away from the windows. Fiona cocks the shotgun on instinct, backing away from the doors and glancing back to her son. "Liam, get down in the basement now. Stiles, get down here!"

That last part is shouted up the stairs, because with Lydia screaming like that, there's no way he's not awake. She doesn't want Dina upstairs where they can't protect her. The sooner she's down in the basement and away from the windows the better.

Cora is dragging Lydia up the stairs with her, using her body to shield the other girl. She can take a bullet, she'll heal. Lydia won't. She's just about to make it to the porch when she feels one of the bullets catch her in the shoulder, and she stumbles, dropping to her knees against the bottom step.

Lydia turns, coming back to herself more with the smell of blood. "Cora?"

"I'm fine, get in the house!" She starts to push herself up to her feet, but she falters slightly, her eyes flashing as she stumbles, her hands coming out to brace herself on the steps. Lydia's eyes go to the bullet, sees the smoke coming from it, and her eyes widen.

"Wolfsbane."

Cora grits her teeth, her voice a near growl as she tries to push herself up again. "Lydia, go!"

Cora lets her brother pull her, transferring her right to Fiona's arms once she's close enough. All the voices sound sort of distant and she knows that's the poison more than anything else. She feels fingers pressing against the bullet wound and she snarls uselessly, the wolf in her not wanting someone point at her injury.

"I need to get her downstairs and get that bullet out. I'll fix her. You get rid of them." That's mostly to Derek. "Lydia, Stiles, I need you with me downstairs. C'mon."

Lydia doesn't argue, shifting to Cora's injured side and taking one arm around her shoulders before following Fiona's lead downstairs. They stopped at the stainless steel table in the middle and Cora could feel herself being shifted into it.

"Liam, you have one super duper very important job - watch Dina." Fiona glances to Stiles as she does, before raising her eyebrows. "Unless you have any objections to that since they're staying down here."

"Stiles!"

Lydia is getting ready to charge after him when Fiona catches her arm, pulling her back. She doesn't know what Stiles is up to and frankly she doesn't care. She just wants to save her sister-in-law before it's too late.

"I need you here. I can't manage her all on my own and I need you to keep her distracted. Can you do that?"

Lydia sobers for a moment, then nods, making her way over to Cora's good side, stroking a hand across her face before taking her hand firmly.

"You said Stiles. What's wrong with Stiles?"

"Nothing. Nothing's wrong," she murmurs softly, as Fiona gets ready to remove the bullet from Cora's shoulder. "Everything's going to be just fine."

Except for the parts that weren't.

Nadia had followed as close as she could behind Peter, but she's still slower on her human legs. She sticks back to the trees, wanting to keep herself hidden and not draw too much attention to herself until she had to.

Apparently they did. Talia's still watching from the window, but if he keeps talking, she'll show them just how much of a "dog" she can be. She does move to the doorway, however, standing behind her husband and essentially daring them to shoot at her.

Meanwhile, behind them, the hunters that Peter has been dealing with are finding themselves gurgling on their own blood, throats torn out quickly from behind. She doesn't stop, moving to back up Derek, and she doesn't intend to stop until all of the hunters are bloody shredded messes.

You shot her mate. She intends to do something about it.

The shot silences Nadia and Talia both, both women regarding him seriously for a moment. Nadia glances back to Derek, before nodding to where Peter was. "Get him to Fiona. Talia and I will deal with this." There's another pause, then. "Call the sheriff."

She then turns and steps back up to Stiles meeting his eyes gently and reaching for the weapon in his hand.

"Stiles, give me the gun."

Cora's going to be fine. Fiona made sure of that. She's dozing peacefully on the table, Lydia smoothing her hair back from her forehead and not thinking about that final bang! that she just heard. She's going to pretend she doesn't know what it was, pretend that she doesn't know far more about death than she ever wanted to know.

Fiona looks up at puppy Peter and nods. "Take Cora upstairs to her room so she can sleep it off. I'll work on him here." She then turns and looks to the wolf, concerned. "Whatever you do? Don't shift. Not until I get the bullet and the wolfsbane out."

Nadia takes the gun from him gently, placing it on the ground gently, before taking another step closer to him. "It's okay. You're okay. Everyone's fine." Except for Ray, of course.

Nadia looks like she's about to follow after him, but Talia catches her shoulder first and shakes her head. "I'll take care of this. You be here when the sheriff gets here." Nadia looks uncertain but nods in agreement. Talia then follows after Stiles, not quickly, but enough that she doesn't lose the scent as she goes.

Cora burrows into her brother's arms slightly, searching out his scent as a source of comfort on instinct. She doesn't stir any more than that, however, and when she's placed down in her bedroom, she just curls up into Lydia's side and sleeps straight through whatever noise is happening around her.

Cora curls instinctively, protectively around Dina in her sleep. She wouldn't be much use in a fight, but the urge is there, so long as Dina lets her.

Fiona glances up as she finishes burning out the rest of the wolfsbane, before nodding and taking the blanket from Derek, spreading it over the lower half of the wolf. "We're good. I got it all, you can shift back now." She would have let him do it before, but she didn't want to run the risk of something getting lost in his system once internal organs started shifting around.

Talia catches up with him and immediately crouches down next to him, one hand moving towards his back slowly. "Stiles?" She speaks clearly so that he can hear her before she touches him, not wanting to panic him more than he already was.

Fiona smirks a bit before giving his shoulder a soft squeeze and turning back to Derek. Now that the major injuries are fixed, she's going to focus all her worry on him. "Are you okay? You didn't catch anything, did you?"

Talia knows what he's saying without him having to say it. She reaches for his shoulder gently, pulling him into a hug before he can protest and just letting him bury into her if he wants to.

"It's okay. It'll be okay."

"You stay." Fiona doesn't even look away from Derek, pointing back in Peter's direction, because she knows what he's doing and that's gonna stop right then. He can get dressed, if he feels he must, but he's not going any further than that until he can move without being in pain. "I'll get Nadia." Because she knows what he's after, and she's going to give her some time to get a little less bloody.

Talia just reels him in close smoothing a hand over the back of his head as she shushes him softly. She knows this is a lot for anyone to go through and she keeps her voice calm, just letting him get out what he needed to get out.

"You were protecting your family." Her family, but really her family has always been his family. "It'll be okay, Stiles."

Nadia's standing there to meet them, covered in blood. She's just finished clawing her way through Ray's corpse, and the gun is ... well, it's better if they don't know where the gun is. Plausible deniability. Ray's head is barely discernible as Ray's head mostly because it looked like it had been bashed in repeatedly. She glances over to the sheriff and huffs a breath, blowing a stray strand out of her face.

"They were here for your son. You might want to go with 'animal attacks.'" She's not even going to bother to pretend she didn't do most of the damage. There's no point. "But off the record? Stiles shot that one." She tips her head to the heavily mutilated corpse. "Talia's with him now, but I thought you should be prepared. He was going to kill Talia, Stiles stopped him."

Which is ... really the basic rundown of it all.

"They were working with hunters, though. Someone close to them knows."

Talia continues to shush him softly, rocking him gently as she does. "No, you're not. You're not like them." There's a great deal of difference between someone who's killed and someone who's a killer. "You were protecting your family. That doesn't make you a monster."
